Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to hold a press conference on Rampal Power Plant project today.
It will be held at the PM’s official residence Gonobhaban at 4 pm.
The press conference has been scheduled amid widespread criticisms and demonstrations against the coal-fired power generation project being implemented 14-km away from the Sundarbans.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday also raised her voice in favour of the 20-party alliance against the 1,320MW power project of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company – a joint venture between Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited of India.
A citizens’ committee, comprised mainly of left-leaning political parties, to protect oil, gas and mineral resources has long been protesting the project, arguing that it would destroy the world’s largest mangrove forest.
