The High Court has asked Bangladesh Bank (BB) to freeze the bank accounts of the owners Tampaco Foils Limited – a factory of the company in Tongi was ravaged by a fire on September 10, leaving at least 39 people dead.
A bench of the court comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das issued the order today, also issuing a rule asking the authorities to explain why the victims of the incident would not be provided with compensation.
It said the money from the account would be spent on providing salaries and compensation of the factory workers.
The court also asked the central bank to submit bi-monthly reports on the purposes the money from the confiscated account was spent for.
The rule was issued upon hearing a writ petition seeking compensation for the victims and necessary steps to arrest the people responsible for the incident.
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Ain O Salish Kendra and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) filed the petition on September 19.
